DARE TO DREAM
G98.7 FM
In a world seemingly so often filled with despair, it is
always a welcome oasis to encounter stories of triumph over adversity. For Toronto’s Black community, that
arrived in the form of G98.7 FM as championed by
its Founder, President, CEO & Station Manager, Fitzroy
Gordon. For 10 years Gordon sought general radio licensing
from the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications
Commission (CRTC), but to no avail. A less determined
man would have given up long ago – Fitzroy Gordon did
not. Fast forward to the birth of one man’s dream and all
that it means for those who eagerly listen to the station, and
you will find the man who had a dream,
smiling whenever
you see him.
It is not enough to dream, it is not enough to work
hard; to achieve success beyond the ordinary, it is necessary to
persevere. This is the mettle from which leaders are created.
It is fitting therefore that this Jamaican born visionary now
living in Canada, should host Jamaican Prime Minister, Portia
Simpson-Miller during her first official visit to Canada – she was joined by Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper.
With over 300,000 Jamaicans living in Canada and the two
Commonwealth nations celebrating 50 years of diplomatic
relations simultaneously with Jamaica’s 50th Anniversary of
independence, no media coverage would have been complete
without the inclusion of Gordon’s station.
Fitzroy Gordon’s tenacity is a blazing light letting us
know that all things are possible. This God-fearing man, who
plucked weeds from the Hope Botanical Gardens in Jamaica
with his grandmother and at one point wore one black suit
every day as an adult, now stands between Heads of States
as their host. The fulfilment of Gordon’s passion is only the
beginning of his work, but it inspires us all to dare and achieve.
